Precision Electroplating

Copper - Nickel - Silver - Hard Gold - Pure Gold - Rhodium

Electroplating is the process of electro-depositing a metal on to a substrate to give the bulk material a specific surface characteristic. A few examples and reasons for plating are given below.

The process is carried out in a tank, which contains a complex aqueous solution and includes a metal in chemical form e.g. copper sulphate.

The item to be plated is suspended in the tank and made cathodic by connecting it to the negative side of a computer controlled low voltage direct current (DC) supply.

Also suspended in the tank is an anode usually a billet of the metal to be deposited. The anode is connected to the positive side of the DC supply.

The anode dissolves under the influence of electricity and the metal ions travel from the anode to the cathode and thus the electro-deposit is built up on the cathode. The basic process is the same for all metals that can be electroplated e.g. gold, silver, copper, nickel etc.

Using the Laws of Physics the weight and therefore the thickness of the metal being deposited can be calculated.

All electroforming is tracked, monitored and controlled by computer.

BJS recently installed its third generation digital computerised control system.

After inputting the measured surface area and the specified average thickness of metal required, the weight of metal is calculated as is the required plating time and current.

The system controls the current on each job in every tank, as well as, how long its been plating.

How your pieces were plated is stored for 5 years and so when you want the same plating again the system plates the work in exactly the same way as the earlier batch ensuring consistency from piece to piece and from year to year.

By using state of the art control equipment you can be assurred that your work has been monitored, controlled and tracked through all processing, to meet your specification and conform to the International Quality Standard ISO9001.

Electroplating costs are based on surface area and the thickness of the required deposit.
